1. Notes: 3 / 3 months ago

We’re a full six months into DC’s bold new experiment, The New 52. In the weeks leading up to the debut of a rebooted DC Universe, as more and more information came out, I alternated between excited and horrified. But because I don’t think you can judge any comic series until six issues have been published (especially in today’s “write for the trade” atmosphere), I have mostly held off on blogging about the new titles. And what I have written has for the most part been about my disappointment (e.g. “Green Arrow”).

So now that we’re a half a year into the reboot, I thought I’d talk about some of the books I’m really enjoying.

    Animal Man

Simply the best title DC is publishing right now, a great mix of horror and superheroics. I love the moody artwork and the focus on Buddy Baker as a family man, especially the expanded role for his daughter Maxine. I even like the new (well, old) costume. I’m hoping Jeff Lemire adds Animal Man to the Justice League Dark line-up when he takes over that title, because it would be great to see Buddy interacting with other heroes.

    Batwing

Man, was this one a surprise. I didn’t think the world needed another Bat-title, but the writing and art on this one made it an instant must-read. I love the developing backstory with the former superhero team The Kingdom and the way this book feels connected to the other Batman titles but still its own thing. Only complaint: the opening arc seems to be dragging a little too long.

    Birds of Prey

It’s been so long since someone other than Gail Simone was writing “Birds of Prey” I actually forgot I used to really like it. I’m really happy with this new take which brings back the espionage feel of the Chuck Dixon era, and I love new character Starling.

    Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E.

I had high expectations for this one after the fantastic Grant Morrison “Frankenstein” mini that was part of his “Seven Soldiers” series, but so far it’s been exactly what I wanted: a super quirky mash-up of superheroics and monster movies.

The Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Men

I’ve already written about this title, which I’m enjoying despite the fact that it looks nothing like the previous “Firestorm” series. I’m sure it will get cancelled soon and the characters will either disappear into limbo or be altered to more closely resemble their pre-reboot versions, but right now I’m having fun with this totally new take on the material.

    Green Lantern: New Guardians

As a Kyle Rayner fan I was always going to read this series, but I never expected it to be so much fun. I don’t know where things will go after the opening arc concludes, but right now I’m really digging it.

    Justice League Dark

From the opening pages, “Justice League Dark” had me hooked. I love the line-up, the artwork, and the “throw everything at the wall to see what sticks” writing of Peter Milligan. Of the three Justice League books being published now, this is by far the best.

    Suicide Squad

I don’t care how much you hate the new Harley Quinn costume, this is a fun series. The first issue was a little weak, but lately it’s been the most consistently entertaining title DC puts out.

    Wonder Woman

Another great title with a horror feel to it. The writing is sharp and the artwork is fantastic. I haven’t been as blown away by the last couple of issues, but this is still the best “Wonder Woman” series I’ve ever read.
