I’m only going to say this once, then I’ll never speak of it again: DC Comics should not do prequels, sequels, or any kind of -quels to “Watchmen”. It’s a brilliant work that stands alone. It does not need to revisited. Everything you need to know about that world can be found in the twelve issues created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. No good can come of this.
All of the writers and artists involved (Brian Azzarello, Darwyn Cooke, J. Michael Straczynski, Len Wein, J.G. Jones, Adam Hughes, Andy and Joe Kubert, Jae Lee, and Amanda Conner) should be ashamed to be part of such an obvious money grab. This isn’t about wanting to “build on the complex mythology of the originals” as DC says, it’s about money pure and simple. Of course comic books are a business, and of course DC wants to make money. But some things are sacred, and they should know better than to tarnish the one thing they’ve published that is almost universally accepted as a true work of art.
Obviously Alan Moore is against this project, and given his tumultuous history with DC Comics that’s not too surprising. But I think Dave Gibbon’s comments on the matter are very telling: “The original series of WATCHMEN is the complete story that Alan Moore and I wanted to tell. However, I appreciate DC’s reasons for this initiative and the wish of the artists and writers involved to pay tribute to our work. May these new additions have the success they desire.”
That’s an incredibly diplomatic way to say “DC wants to make money off my work, and good luck to the writers and artists who have stupidly taken on this assignment.”
For the record, I won’t buy these miniseries. I won’t read them in the store for free. And I won’t blog about them, because as far as I’m concerned they don’t exist.
