For my 750th post I decided to share the two web series I wrote and directed a few years ago. All 10 episodes can be found on my Blender Films YouTube channel (see link above).

The first series was “Cassandra King”, a 3-4 minute sitcom about a girl who can kill with her thoughts put into everyday annoying situations. Over the course of four episodes Cassandra tried to make the shift from top secret government killing machine to normal office worker, all with the help of her roommate Addie.

My second series, “Betsy Hill, Girl Detective”, was a little more ambitious: a 6 part mystery serial told in weekly episodes. To maintain that schedule I had to write and shoot everything up front, instead of filming the episodes one at a time like I did with “Cassandra”. The episodes varied in length (from 2-5 minutes), and each one ended with a cliffhanger.

I’m a big believer that you should never be ashamed of your early work because it made you the creative person you are today. While these short videos are a little rough around the edges (I was still teaching myself how to direct, edit, mix sound, and create titles) I’m proud of them. They were also a lot of fun to make.

I’d always planned to do a follow-up series. I considered a sequel (“Son of Cassandra King”) or maybe a crossover (where Cassandra would be framed for murder and Betsy would have to clear her name) but once I started doing freelance video work it was hard to make the time. Then I went back to school, and a few of my actors moved away, so nothing ever came of it.

But lately I’ve been wanting to get back into production. I have a job with a mostly regular schedule, and I know a lot more about filmmaking than I did a few years ago. I’ve actually been thinking about revisiting “Cassandra” in a different way, maybe even rebooting the series.

No matter what I decided to shoot, I’ll post production updates and links to the final product on this blog. But in the meantime, feel free to check out “Cassandra King” and “Betsy Hill, Girl Detective”.

Welcome to '... like the appliance', a collection of random thoughts from Anton Blender. Mostly about pop culture, a lot on comic books and television.

Feel free to ask me a question!
