    “Justified” returns tonight for a third season. I’m a little apprehensive because I’ve seen many great shows stumble in their third years. The second season managed somehow to be even better than the first (which was amazing, but wasted its first few episodes on criminal-of-the-week stories that felt like they belonged on USA instead of the network that gave us “The Shield”), so the bar has been set pretty high. Still, I’m cautiously optimistic that the producers will make Boyd’s return to his illegal ways interesting and come up with more exciting situations where Raylan tells someone he is going to shoot them right before he does actually shoot them. To tie in with the start of the new season, Barnes & Noble recently released “Fire In The Hole” (the Elmore Leonard short story which inspired the series) as a $1.99 ebook. I just finished reading it and was surprised at just how faithful the “Justified” pilot is to the source material. FX de-aged most of the characters, and Boyd’s fate is changed to keep him around for the series, but for the most part it reads almost like a novelization of the episode. The only major characters not present are Winona (who is only mentioned) and Raylan’s father (who is deceased). Also included in the ebook is a preview of Elmore Leonard’s new book “Raylan”, the plot of which sounds very similar to season two of “Justified”. I don’t know if the show inspired the book or of the producers used Leonard’s outline as a basis for the season, but either way I’m sure the success of “Justified” played a role in Leonard’s decision to write a third novel starring Raylan Givens. “Justified” airs tonight on FX at 10 pm EST.
