I haven’t had a lot of time to blog lately, but I’ve seen quite a few movies I wanted to comment on. That’s why I’m doing one quick End Of The Year Movies Roundup post to talk about everything I’ve seen since Christmas.
Tintin

I knew nothing about the original source material except that it is wildly popular in Europe, and I generally don’t like all-motion-capture films like The Polar Express, but I really enjoyed this movie. I saw it in 3D IMAX and it looked incredible. I’m not sure it will hold up great on home video, but as a theatre experience it was pretty great.
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Usually I hate Hollywood versions of foreign language films, but in the case of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo I was so disappointed with the Swedish film I was actually looking forward to the remake. David Fincher does a great job of adapting the novel, and Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara are perfect as Blomkvist and Lisbeth. Definitely worth seeing for fans of the book series.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

It’s a little slow, and there are lots of scenes of British spies sitting around tables drinking tea and talking, but Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a great little Cold War drama. It boasts a phenomenal cast and is full of great performances, especially the always spectacular Gary Oldman. The quiet cat and mouse policies of the era won’t appeal to everyone, but a sequence where Benedict Cumberbatch has to sneak documents out of his own office is as tense and exciting as any gunfight or car chase.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

I thoroughly enjoyed this latest Mission: Impossible film, it’s one of the best in the series. But there are a lot of things in Ghost Protocol that don’t make any sense. Like how the bad guy knows the IMF team is infiltrating the Kremlin, or how a middle aged Russian politician-turned-terrorist is able to hold his own in hand-to-hand combat with trained field agent Ethan Hunt. Fortunately, Ghost Protocol is so much fun it doesn’t matter that none of these things are addressed or explained.
So that’s it, that’s all the movies I’ve seen lately. I do want to get out to see The Devil Inside because I’m a sucker for anything about exorcisms, and Young Adult is supposed to be good. But right now my priority is Steven Soderbergh’s latest (Haywire) which opens next Friday.
